Abstract
To evaluate the current trend of atrial fibrillation(Af), clinical study was done on 300 patients with Af in the aspect of underlying diseases, particulary. All patients were on admission in the Chung-Ang University Hospital from January 1989 to
December 1991.
@ES Following results were obtained.
@EN 1) The incidence of Af was no significant difference in both sex. The highest prevalence was on seventh decade(34.4%).
2) Underlying diseases of Af were hypertension(26.7%), rheumatic heart disease(21.3%), congestive cardiomyopathy(11.3%), ischemic heart disease(6.0%) and hyperthyroidism(4.3%). Lone Af occupied 19.7%.
The most common was hypertension in chronic Af. In paroxysmal Af, the most common underlying cause was lone Af(38.8%).
3) The presenting symptoms and signs were dyspnea(38.5%), embolism*18.5%), palpitation*17.5%) and chest discomfort(9.2%). In the 16.3% of all patients, they had no specific symptoms and signs.
4) The mean value of echocardiographic left atrial dimension in patients who showed a left atrial dimension over 4,0 cm(chronic Af:82.7%, paroxysmal: 56.5%) was 5.2 cm.
5) Complications found in 224 episodes of 201 patients of all patients, were congestive heart failure(66.5%: 149 episodes), thromboembolism(26.8%: 60 episodes), and death(6.5%: 15 episodes).
